MARS PLATER

Picture

pronouns: they/them/their

I am a historian who studies what low-income New Yorkers did for fun, outdoors, during the nineteenth century. I'm thinking about how "nature" (whatever that is!) nurtures unruliness as I explore the history of cruising, protests, play, and policing in green spaces. I teach courses on U.S. and environmental history at UConn-Stamford. I organize queer and trans-affirming events on campus and am part of a team working to turn neglected cemeteries into pollinator pathways. I live on a barrier island and walk on the beach in all kinds of weather!
